Gamelin, General Maurice Gustave

Gamelin, General Maurice Gustave
1872–1958
A military bureaucrat rather than a soldier, Gamelin had made his name as Head of the Operations Section of the French General Headquarters during World War I. An interwar Commander in Chief, he was Commander of Land Forces in 1940, responsible for the direction of strategy and the co-ordination of the French and British forces in the defense of France. He proved unable either to give firm and clear directions to his subordinates or to react energetically to events and had to be removed from office in the first days of the German offensive of May 1940.
